The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades women’s basketball team kicked off the new year with a dominant weekend, sweeping the Victoria Vikes in a two-game series at CARSA Performance Gym. The victories propelled UFV to a 6-7 record in Canada West play, matching the Vikes’ mark after the losses dropped them to the same standing.
On Friday, January 9, the Cascades cruised to a 73-57 win, led by Julia Tuchscherer’s standout performance of 27 points and eight rebounds. Miah Schuurman added 18 points and four steals, while Fania Taylor’s timely three-pointer helped extend UFV’s halftime lead to 13. The Vikes mounted a third-quarter push, outscoring UFV 20-15 to close within eight points, but couldn’t overcome the deficit. Makena Anderson paced Victoria with 19 points, and Iva Kalabric grabbed 10 rebounds.
Saturday’s rematch was tighter, with UFV outlasting the Vikes 68-60. Tuchscherer again shone, posting 25 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks in a double-double effort. The game saw momentum swings: Victoria led 33-32 at halftime after a second-quarter rally, but UFV’s 9-2 run to end the third quarter proved decisive. Anderson scored 19 for the Vikes once more, while Eden Henderson notched a career-high 15 points on five three-pointers. A late Vikes push fell short as UFV sealed the sweep with strong free-throw shooting.
This series completes a 3-0 season sweep for UFV over Victoria, showcasing Tuchscherer’s scoring prowess and the Cascades’ resilience.
